Temporary Career Success Mentor
Job Description
- Complete paid training by employers and career preparation professionals to provide effective résumé, cover letter, interviewing, digital profile, etc. guidelines and coach students on these topics during 30-minute one-on-one appointments
- Provide positive feedback and improvement suggestions to students
- Assist with or lead program development projects (based program needs and your skills/interests)
- Professional dress* and adherence to BYU-Idaho dress and grooming is required at all times
*Women: dress shirt/blouse, skirt/dress pants; Men: tie and dress shirt with suit pants
NOTE 1: Students hired must commit to serving in this position for two consecutive semesters
Required Qualifications
- Strong command of English language; ability to write clearly and edit well (according to English spelling, grammar, etc. standards)
- Teachable, conscientious, customer-centric, highly dependable, & punctual
- Competent in Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet research, etc.
- Excellent interpersonal/communication skills
- Ability to connect well with students from a variety of backgrounds
- Ability to give positive and corrective feedback to other students in clear ways that build and inspire
- Ability to receive and implement corrective feedback from employers, supervisor, and other trainers
- Ability to work well independently and in groups
- Must be able to work one of the following shifts Monday – Friday:
- 8 AM – 11 AM
- 11 AM – 2 PM
- 2 PM – 5 PM
- Attend weekly training meetings, typically every Wednesday at 2 PM.
Preferred Qualifications
- Successful completion of BUS 320: Advanced Writing in Professional Contexts (or other 300-level advanced writing course)
- Successful office and/or customer services experience
- Successful completion of a professional internship
- Successful experience training/leading/mentoring others
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Excellent organization and problem-solving skills
- Competent with Excel, databases, and/or social media platforms
- Ability to quickly learn online tools such as Handshake, Portfolium, LinkedIn, I-Learn (Canvas), etc.
Paid Orientation Meetings (Attendance Required)
- Attend start-of-semester orientation meetings on Tuesday, January 7. (Regular work shifts begin Wednesday, January 8)
BUS 100 Presentations
- Sign up for at least two Business Career Development Presentation during the semester
- There are a total of ten presentations usually at 11:00 AM or 5:30 PM
